After the Doukas and the Komnenos, the Angelos family was the third Byzantine dynasty with a surname. It was a family which appeared relatively late in history and quickly moved up the ranks to the top level of the Byzantine aristocracy. Constantine Angelos, the founder of the lineage, was of low origin and came from the town of Philadelphia in Asia Minor. Thanks primarily to his attractive appearance, he married the daughter of the Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, and thus begun the rise of the Angelos family. By the time of his grandsons, Isaac and Alexios, the family had already ascended the Byzantine throne. The Angelos dynasty ruled over the Byzantine Empire from 1185 to 1204, while one of its branches founded the State of Epirus after the fall of Constantinople, and ruled over it for more than a century. |
