ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
Byzantium, due to its strategic location, played an important role in the civil war (193-195) between Septimius Severus and Pescennius Niger, who were both proclaimed emperors by their troops. Situated on the borders between the two dominant regions, it was first captured by the army of Niger and then besieged by Severus, who managed to capture it after two and a half years: as a punishment he imposed the destruction of the city’s walls and its other public buildings, the settlement being relegated to the status of a village of Perinthus. Few years later Severus restored the city’s rights and aided its rebuilding. |
