ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
A family of Asia Minor hailing from the theme of Paphlagonia. The Paphlagonians were not of illustrious descent, but they became distinguished thanks to the court positions held by the eunuch John Orphanotrophos. Despite the fact that two of its members, Michael IV and Michael V, ascended the throne, the family was never included among the ranks of Byzantine aristocracy. After the overthrow of Michael V in 1042, the Paphlagonians’ influence and power were lost outright. |
