ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
In 161 AD the Parthian king Vologases IV captured Armenia, Osroene and then invaded the Roman province of Syria. Rome reacted by gathering a great army in the area under the nominal leadership of the co-emperor Lucius Verus, who arrived at Antioch travelling through the west and south coasts of Asia Minor. By 163 AD the Parthians had been driven out of Armenia and Syria. In the following two years the Roman counteroffensive was continued in Osroene and Mesopotamia with the sack of Seleuceia and the Parthian capital of Ctesiphon. Notwithstanding the outbreak of a deadly epidemic which infected a large part of the Roman army, the advance continued into Media. The war ended in 166 AD. Armenia and Osroene returned to the Roman sphere of influence with the appointment of vassal rulers, while the empire annexed lands beyond the Euphrates. In the same year Verus returned to Rome travelling through Asia Minor receiving honours from its inhabitants. |
