Constantinople (Κωνσταντινούπολις, “the city of Constantine”), the capital of the Byzantine empire, was founded by emperor Constantine I on the southern part of the Bosporos, on the site of the ancient Greek city of Byzantion. The city was founded in 324 and dedicated on 11 May 330. Constantine sponsored a significant building program to enlarge and beautify his new capital. |
