ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
The Greek-orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople experienced after 1923 a series of fundamental mutations since it lost its political character, and was deprived, due to the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, of a great number of dioceses and the majority of its flock. After 1945 the ascension of Athinagoras to the patriarchal throne inaugurated a golden period for the Patriarchate which was terminated though because of the Septemvriana riots and the expulsion of Greek inhabitants of Constantinople. After 1991 the election of Bartholomeos meant that the Ecumenical Patriarchate is much more active in a number of sectors. |
