The Byzantine church of Theotokos Peribleptos, built by Romanos III Argyros in 1030-1034, was located in the south-west part of the city, at the site of the modern church of Surp Kevork (Sulu Manastır), the armenian church of St. George. The superstructure of the original Byzantine building was either a cross-in-square or a cross-domed core surrounded by ambulatory. In the 19th century, it had been already destroyed by multiple fires; however, the substructure of the building has been surveyed and published (1997-9), allowing a reconstruction of the Byzantine church based on architectural evidence. |
