Megas Logothetes of the Patriarchate
Ecclesiastical office that was occupied by laymen. Megas Logothetes had the right to participate in the synod, the assembly that elected the Patriarch. He also had the obligation to translate in Ottoman Turkish the letter of the newly-elected patriarch to the Ottoman Sultan. He recited the Credo during mass in the presence of the patriarch and the members of the synod, as well as the Prayer on Sundays. The person who occupied this office received a substantial fund; the office was abolished following the passing of the General Regulations at the tanzimat period.
