The aristocracy of Constantinople formed for the largest part of the Byzantine history the upper strata of the society of the capital, as well as of the Byzantine aristocracy. Its dependency on the emperor made the aristocracy to form close ties with the imperial court in the capital; and it was perhaps only towards the end of the 12th century that this situation changed. |
