The Hippodrome was an important center for the public life of Constantinople. The Roman factions of the Hippodrome in Constantinople were called demoi, which started as adherents’ parties, namely sports clubs, but soon acquired a political character as well. The two most powerful circus factions were the Venetoi (Blues) and the Greens. In reference to the composition of the demoi, it seems that they were discerned by social and religious elements. Exponents of a trend for political freedom that had a long tradition in the cities of antiquity, the demoi acquired great power between the 5th and the 7th century and were very often in conflict with the Byzantine emperors and among each other. During the later centuries they gradually lost their importance and they ended up participating only in grandiose palace ceremonies. |
